Quilting is a fascinating art form. Due to their near-unlimited creative potential (as you’re only bound by the basic rules of sewing and the materials available) and the medium’s accessibility, hundreds of people have used quilts to tell their stories, cataloging the ups and downs of their families and communities. Campfire Quilt is a wonderful TTRPG that taps into this, using an imagined quilt as a canvas for storytelling.
The game’s premise is simple. During a quiet evening by the fire, the players’ eyes wander to the massive quilt sitting by the fireplace. Inspired by this quilt, the players decide to tell the stories the quilt’s various squares represent.
A Tale Made Of Cloth

The game’s main flow is broken into turns. At the start of their turn, the player rolls three six-sided dice and consults the included table to learn the central motifs on the quilt square they are currently glancing at.
The player then tells the other players a story using these motifs. Once the player has completed the story, another player takes control, and the process repeats until the group feels satisfied.
Campfire Quilt’s motif table is the game’s highlight, as it is fantastically designed. Most importantly, each entry gives players a firm direction (which is crucial for players new to improv) without ever railroading players in a specific direction (preventing the stories from getting repetitive). However, what makes Campfire Quilt’s table truly shine is that each included motif can be read as literal or symbolic, allowing players to approach them from numerous different angles. Thus, the game has fantastic replay value as every combination of motifs can be used to tell hundreds of stories.
However, this isn’t the only good thing about Campfire Quilt, as the TTRPG is packed with numerous neat little flourishes. One nice element of Campfire Quilt is its flexibility. Most notably, the game comes with many tiny rule tweaks that players can opt to include if they fit their group.
My favorite of these additional rules suggests players add a light timer (between 2 and 10 minutes) to each round. On paper, it might sound like this rule would ruin the cozy vibe the game is going for. However, in practice, it helps keep the game flowing and gently encourages players to tell thematically relevant stories.
While quilts can tell an infinite number of stories, a single panel usually represents a small chunk of a wider tale or a single moment in history. Thus, including a timer helps encourage players to conform to the traditional format.
Gentle Guidance Leads To Great Experiences

Plus, in improv scenarios, stories often expand to fit the available time. Thus, in games where players have unlimited time and can’t lose control of the story, players’ stories growing exponentially is a common problem.
When this happens, players frequently lose track of both their story’s core thread and its overall theme. This means that, rather than ending conclusively, the story instead peters out as the player loses confidence or runs out of ideas. This, in turn, often undercuts the game’s sense of flow and its overall thematic cohesion. Thus, using a timer is a fantastic idea, as the ticking clock encourages players to create a tale of suitable length and to stay on topic while telling it. Thus, each story comes to a conclusive end, and the game retains its thematic core.
Another fun optional rule is an extra table that players can roll on to get more details about their quilt square. However, rather than a table of additional motifs (which is the usual trend for storytelling TTRPGs), the prompts in this second table focus on the construction of the quilt square, from squares that are surprisingly ornate to squares that were clearly made by a child just learning to sew.
This is a fantastic way to approach a bonus table. While the designer could have gotten away with suggesting that more confident players use four motifs rather than three, this wouldn’t make the process feel different or lead to better stories (because there is a decent chance the extra motif would be overshadowed by the original three). However, by having the bonus prompts focus on a different element of the quilt square, the game encourages confident players to expand their storytelling and approach the concept from a different angle, massively increasing the number of stories they can tell.
Campfire Quilt is a charming storytelling TTRPG that is sure to delight fans of rules-lite improv games. The game’s rules are perfectly tuned to guide players gently toward the developer’s desired experience. Thus, games of Campfire Quilt quickly fall into a natural rhythm and always feel cohesive, even with groups of vastly different improv experience. Combine this with its excellently written prompt table, and Campfire Quilt is a game guaranteed to produce some memorable stories that will stick with players long after the session ends.
